How We Started Rocking

Stillflow are a progressive indie rock outfit from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The group began as a duo project during the COVID-19 pandemic. Founding members Alex Hart and Thunder Trythall were acquainted through a mutual friend and began making music together shortly after.

We routinely convened over FaceTime to write songs following our first in-person jam session in May of 2020. These virtual sessions resulted in a multitude of songs, some of which appeared on a self-released, self-titled EP six months later. With the help of local musicians Matt Subers and Ian Cornele filling in on percussion, we were able to produce a proof-of-concept for the group and move forward with a small amount of notoriety.

The EP caught the attention of drummer/engineer Aaron Criswell, who aimed to take Stillflow in a more promising direction sonically, as the EP had been described by one publication as an “obvious home recording.” Criswell had worked with Hart previously in a Lancaster-based progressive metal trio, Baboons in the Attic, who released an EP of live demos in early 2019, produced by Criswell.

“StillFlow is an incredibly talented and technical act. Their piece “To Pieces” just highlights how progressive their music is in terms of technicality and musicality. If you are looking for emotional music that is intricate, precise, and yet easy to listen to, look no further than StillFlow.”

-The Story

Continued Growth & Additional Band Members

Around the same time, guitarist Nate Hart, who had been introduced to the Stillflow EP during pre-production, was recruited to sit in on bass. After gelling well in rehearsal, Hart was encouraged to join the project full-time. Stillflow, now four strong, began writing and arranging a repertoire of songs to perform live.

With the help of Caleb Criss and Greg Fawcett, two thirds of the Giant Tortoise Productions team, Stillflow began recording sessions at Fawcett’s home studio in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. Over five consecutive weekends in January and February of 2021, we recorded aggressively, cutting the principal drum and bass tracks in just two days a piece. When tracking concluded, we had an album’s worth of songs at the ready.

Over the next few years, we spent our time playing gigs around the Northeast to promote our music. Whether we were playing in a bar or a basement, the band impressed audiences with our eclectic assortment of original tunes, and we were able to accrue a small, loyal following.

We released our debut LP, Eft, on January 27, 2023. The album title refers to the infant stage of a newt, which is exactly where the band was when we began recording. The album was received well, and performed in its entirety to a near sold-out room in Lancaster a day later. Since then we have written many more tunes, and plan to release a second EP in early 2024.

Meet The Band

Thunder Smith

Vocals/Guitar

Thunder has been playing guitar for the last 11 years, but he got his love of performing from years in the school choir. Active in various bands throughout high school, he started honing his love of songwriting in his junior year. When not performing with Stillflow, he is a Sous-Chef. He loves animals, and tabletop role-playing games.

Alex Hart

Lead Guitar

Alex began his journey in music as a listener, exclusively. By the age of 13, and after several failed attempts, he took an earnest approach to the guitar and has since performed in various ensembles in every corner of the Northeast. With an eclectic musical foundation and an enduring love of progressive rock, he aims to write songs that challenge genre boundaries. In his free time, he enjoys playing video games and is an avid record collector.

Nate Hart

Bass

Nate’s first favorite band was Bad Religion, at age 5. An avid music lover through and through, he has studied a variety of instruments, from the tuba to the concert snare drum. Since forming his first band in the third grade, he has maintained a strong musical presence in an ever-expanding community. Off-stage, he enjoys film, photography, and coffee.

Aaron Criswell

Drums

Aaron has been studying percussion since 5th grade but has carried a pair of sticks since he could walk. During his time at Millersville University, he played on, as well as mixed many recordings for himself and his classmates. He currently works as a cook and a part-time audio engineer when not with the band.
